Overview:

 

For persons new to Red Hat Linux who want to achieve maximum productivity at home or work using Red Hat Linux and desktop-based office application suites for common office productivity tasks. No Linux or UNIX experience is required.

Goal:

 

A person who is proficient at using Red Hat Linux desktop GUI tools and office productivity applications for traditional desktop tasks such as word processing, spreadsheet creation, graphic design, file management, and internet access, and who is able to comfortably share work across platforms.

Audience:

 

Business and home users of the Red Hat Linux operating system, who are transitioning from other platforms and office application suites and want to quickly become equally effective in doing their daily tasks using Linux-based desktop productivity applications and office suites.

Prerequisites:

 

User-level experience with any computer system, use of mouse, use of menus, use of any desktop or window-based application on another operating system.

  1. Use and configure the GNOME graphical user interface
  2. Take advantage of GNOME applications
  3. Configure and customize your Red Hat Linux desktop
  4. Open, edit, and save your work with StarOffice[tm] office suite applications
  5. Create documents with StarWriter
  6. Create spreadsheets with StarCalc
  7. Create presentations with StarImpress
  8. Use StarOffice AutoPilots to quickly produce new documents, spreadsheets, and presentations
  9. Create, manipulate and save graphics files with the GIMP
  10. Understand common file formats on multiple desktop operating systems and applications
  11. Create files with cross-platform compatibility such as .pdf and .rtf
  12. Open, read, edit, save, and send files created under other operating systems such as Microsoft(R) Windows[tm] or MacIntosh(tm) systems.
  13. Configure an Internet connection
  14. Access the Internet using a web browser
  15. Configure and access email accounts for corporate and personal use
  16. Install and configure Red Hat Linux
  17. Download new applications from the Internet and install them on Red Hat Linux
  18. Learn about methods and tools for running and accessing Microsoft Windows based applications on Red Hat Linux simultaneously with other Linux-based office productivity applications
  19. Use of a dual boot system with Red Hat Linux and other operating systems such as Windows.
